In colonial India, tax collectors and soldiers often exploited villagers, demanding more than just taxes. A tax collector demands that Sonbai, a beautiful and confident woman, sleep with him, but she refuses and flees to a spice factory. The factory guard, Abu Mian, locks the door behind her, protecting her from the soldiers and other villagers who try to intervene. As tensions rise, a teacher who follows Gandhi's teachings and a group of women, including the mayor's wife, attempt to protest against the injustice, setting the stage for a final confrontation.
