A lonely and sad man, George Monroe, is diagnosed with terminal cancer and decides to spend his remaining time doing what he truly wants. He sets out to build a new home and reconnect with his rebellious 16-year-old son, Sam, who is struggling with self-destructive behavior. Along the way, George also reconnects with his ex-wife Robin and her new family, and even finds a new sense of purpose with Alyssa, a pretty classmate of Sam's.
