Billie Holiday's early life was marked by hardship, including working in brothels and being raped. Despite these difficulties, she dreamed of becoming a jazz singer. She got her start at a Harlem club, where she met and fell in love with Louis McKay. Billie then joined the Reg Hanley Band, a white group, to gain exposure and eventually make it to Manhattan's mainstream clubs. However, her struggles with substance abuse, particularly heroin, threatened to derail her career and personal life.
