In 1896, the Olympic Games are revived in Athens, and a young shepherd named Spiridon Loues decides to participate in the 26-mile marathon. He meets Christina Gratsos, a maid to actress Eleni Costa, and impresses the American coach with his athletic abilities, earning a spot in the contest. Meanwhile, Eleni announces she will marry the winner, expecting her lover, Lieutenant Vinardos, to take the title.
