Boyo, his brother Sid, and sister Gwenny live with their mother Marlene in a depressed area of South-West Wales. Their father disappeared when they were young, and Sid is obsessed with American culture, dreaming of joining their father in the States. When a new mine opens, the brothers try to get jobs, but their mother is against it. When they're about to start work, they find their mother has sabotaged Sid's bike. Sid and Gwenny start spending more time together, using medication and booze, while their mother's behavior becomes increasingly eccentric.
