After World War I, a man from the Bronx named Bouncer follows his friend Ken "Hell-Fire" Austin to the American West, where they hope to find an easy life. However, they soon find themselves on a chain gang for unpaid debts. While in prison, Ken befriends a wild stallion named Tarzan and becomes determined to help his owner, Judy Brooks, win a high-stakes horse race to save her ranch from foreclosure. But they must evade the sheriff and Ken's former employer, who has his own sinister plans.

As Ken and Bouncer journey west, they arrive at the Brooks ranch, where Ken is set to ride Tarzan in the highly anticipated big race. However, the Sheriff and Edmonds are hot on his heels, and Ken must go into hiding, concealing both himself and the horse until the race begins.
