A Soviet major, delayed for the train to Berlin, discovers his wife has left him and a stranger occupies his apartment, prompting him to remain in the city. He takes refuge in no man's land between East and West Berlin, relying on a small tea urn, a parade uniform, and a white bicycle. Initially, he turns to the black market and underground to survive, while flashbacks reveal his past.
