Fiddler on the Roof background

Fiddler on the Roof

A Jewish peasant in pre-revolutionary Russia struggles to reconcile his traditional values with the modern romantic aspirations of his three daughters, amidst growing anti-Semitic tensions in their village.

In pre-revolutionary Russia, a poor milkman named Reb Tevye lives in the small village of Anatevka with his wife Golde and their five daughters. Traditional customs govern the Jewish community, with matchmakers arranging marriages and fathers approving them. When Tevye's older daughter Tzeitel is matched with a butcher, she falls in love with a poor tailor instead, and Tevye reluctantly agrees to their union. His second daughter Hodel elopes with a revolutionary student, only to have him arrested and sent to Siberia. Hodel decides to join him, leaving her family behind. Meanwhile, Tevye's third daughter Chava falls in love with a Christian, a decision her father cannot accept. As the Czar's troops evict the Jewish community from Anatevka, Tevye must come to terms with the changing world and the choices of his daughters.
