In the small town of Washington state, Emily Mariposa and her business partner Adam raise butterflies for events like children's birthday parties and weddings. After a painful breakup, attending weddings is still difficult for Emily. Her competitor Mandy Fisher is cutthroat, undercutting Emily's prices and knowing little about butterflies beyond raising them for profit. Emily lands a job at a birthday party for a young butterfly enthusiast named Amanda, whose father Garrett asks for a tour of Emily's butterfly farm. This starts a friendship between Emily, Garrett, and Amanda, and Emily finds herself developing feelings for Garrett. However, Garrett has a complicated past and is being pressured by his ex-girlfriend Jill and her father to move to New York and take over the family business.
