In 1928, Ernest Briggs, a milkman, marries Ethel, a housemaid, and they have a son named Raymond in 1934. When World War II breaks out, Ernest joins the fire service, while Ethel allows Raymond to be evacuated to his aunts in Dorset. After the war, Raymond returns home and begins attending grammar school, while Ernest becomes disillusioned with the carnage he witnessed.
