In feudal Osaka, a courtesan named Koharu and a married paper merchant named Jihei fall deeply in love, despite the societal norms against their relationship. As their love becomes all-consuming, Jihei and Koharu make a pact to commit suicide together if they cannot be together on Earth. Their plans are complicated by various characters, including Jihei's brother, Osan's parents, a wealthy suitor named Tahei, and Osan herself, who knows more about Jihei's actions than she lets on. The couple's journey is marked by the consequences of their love and the societal pressures that surround them.
