Ephraim Cabot, a vigorous and possessive old man, is obsessed with his New England farm. His two sons from different marriages, fueled by greed and resentment, harbor bitter feelings towards him. Eben, in particular, feels entitled to the farm, as his mother had owned a significant portion, and is enraged when his father brings home a new wife, Anna. As tensions escalate, Anna subtly provokes Eben, further complicating the already volatile family dynamics.
