Commander Miles Sheffield, a rising star in the US Navy, is on his first command mission aboard the nuclear submarine Lansing. However, a failed Korean nuclear missile causes a disastrous explosion, knocking out his communication system and leaving him isolated and vulnerable in a potential nuclear war. As his rivals plot a mutiny, they plan to have the doctor declare him unfit for duty due to a lack of iodine shots, allowing the XO to take control. Meanwhile, the admiral sees no alternative but to have the nearby Mako submarine hunt down and eliminate the Lansing before it's too late and World War III begins.
