In early 20th-century Vienna, Alma Schindler's life revolves around music, both performing and composing. She becomes the lover of Gustav Mahler, a renowned composer, and eventually marries him, sacrificing her own creative ambitions. As Mahler's assistant and bookkeeper, Alma's responsibilities grow, but she feels suffocated by her role. After a personal tragedy, Alma finds solace in a romantic affair with Walter Gropius, but ultimately marries him, only to be stifled by his imperious nature. She later leaves Gropius for Franz Werfel, who discovers her compositions and helps her share them with the world.
