In 1857, a family faces hardship, with the wife taking in laundry to make ends meet. Their 14-year-old daughter, Bernadette, an asthmatic and illiterate girl, begins to see a beautiful young woman in a grotto. As she converses with the woman, crowds gather and people are miraculously healed by the water from a spring she uncovers. Despite skepticism from secular authorities and even the local monsignor, Bernadette remains steadfast in her faith and wisdom.
