An elderly Jewish shop owner, Mr. Shaddick, reluctantly takes in a young black boy, Herman, as part of a sponsorship program. Initially, he wants to be rid of the child, but decides to keep him after a well-off woman tries to take him away. As they spend more time together, Mr. Shaddick develops a bond with Herman and is burdened with delivering difficult news, which brings back memories of his own painful experiences.
