A rude and mannerless Basque man named Tocho, who works as a night watch in Bilbao's docklands, receives a letter from Tombuctu, Mali, that prompts him to make a drastic change. He leaves his job and travels to France to meet his estranged friend Jean Pierre, with whom he and another friend, Joseba, had traveled to Tombuctu years ago to sell race cars.
