In post-Gaddafi Libya, a CIA base in Benghazi is home to a group of ex-military contractors providing security in a volatile climate. When US Ambassador Chris Stevens visits the area, he stays in a compound near the CIA base, unaware of the danger lurking nearby. On September 11, 2012, the compound is suddenly attacked by a swarm of heavily armed locals, leaving six CIA contractors as the only defenders.
