Stewart "Mac" McMillan, a former US Navy vet and attorney, becomes the Commissioner of Police for San Francisco. He frequently handles high-profile cases personally, often with the help of his wife Sally, whose father was a detective. Sally's involvement sometimes puts her in harm's way. They are aided by Mac's loyal but bumbling assistant, Sgt. Charlie Enright, and their live-in maid Mildred, who is known for her sharp tongue and heavy drinking.
