Dennis Rader's killings took place between 1974 and 1991, during which he killed a total of ten people (with four being killed in one night). He occasionally took breaks during his killing spree. Some periods were marked by the birth of his children, when he didn't have enough free time to stalk potential victims. During these breaks, Rader engaged in auto-erotic behavior and self-bondage. He enjoyed wearing masks he used during some murders or even female underwear taken from his victims throughout his serial killing career. Rader sent several taunting letters to the police and media between 1974 and 1978, in which he described his killings graphically. The first letter was found inside an engineering book at the Wichita Public Library in October 1974. In 1978, he sent another letter to a Wichita-based TV station where he suggested names such as "The Wichita Strangler", "The Wichita Hangman", and "The Asphyxiater". The next letters came later, but a letter from someone using the return address "Bill Thomas Killman" was received in 2004.
