In the midst of a Japanese advance in Burma, a British captain and his weary troops seize a jungle village from enemy forces. Despite the objections of a priest and a war correspondent, the captain orders the execution of two innocent villagers to coerce a Japanese informant into revealing crucial information. However, when the Japanese retake the village, their commander employs a similar tactic against the British, mirroring the desperation and brutality of the original order.
