Voyage of Terror: The Achille Lauro Affair background

Voyage of Terror: The Achille Lauro Affair

The dramatic true story of the 1985 hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro by a group of Palestinian extremists.

Here is a rewritten version of the movie overview: In 1985, the Achille Lauro, a luxury cruise ship, sets sail from Genua, Italy, carrying over 500 passengers from around the world. Unbeknownst to the passengers, four Palestinian terrorists, led by Molqi, are on board, planning to seize the ship. The terrorists, who believe they are on a suicide mission, lock themselves in their cabin and await further instructions. As the passengers enjoy their vacation, the terrorists begin their takeover, storming the bridge and restaurant, and taking hostages. The passengers are filled with fear and horror, except for Leon Klinghoffer, who remains calm and witty despite his physical limitations. The terrorists demand that 50 Palestinians be released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the safe return of the hostages. The international community is thrown into chaos as governments scramble to respond to the crisis. As the ship approaches the Syrian coast, the terrorists prepare to leave the ship, but Molqi has a surprise in store for the American, Israeli, and British hostages. He forces them to go to the top deck, where they are left with no choice but to jump into the water. In a shocking turn of events, Molqi kills Leon Klinghoffer, and the other terrorists are left horrified. The ship is eventually taken to Libya, but the terrorists' demands are met with resistance from the international community. The kidnappers are eventually forced to surrender, and they are taken into custody by the Italian authorities. The terrorists are tried and sentenced to imprisonment, while Abu Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian group, remains at large.
