Three short stories by W. Somerset Maugham are showcased in this anthology film, each with its own unique theme and characters. The first, "The Verger", tells the story of a lifelong bachelor who is fired from his job as a church verger due to his inability to read or write. He then decides to propose to his landlady and start a new business venture. The second story, "Mr. Know-All", follows a boorish jewelry dealer who offends his fellow passengers on a cruise, but later learns the importance of humility in order to make a woman happy. The third and final story, "The Sanatorium", explores the lives of tuberculosis patients at an exclusive Scottish sanatorium, including a doomed couple who choose quality over quantity of life.
