In 1971 Adelaide, Leanne, a young woman training to be a teacher, pursues her passion for photography while dealing with the challenges of living at home with her parents. Her older sister, Bronwyn, struggles to adjust to married life in a remote town and runs away. The arrival of American poet Lou, who encourages people to "seek out the light", inspires the younger generation, including Leanne's neighbor Gary and friend Debra, who are drawn to Lou's charismatic presence.
