In 1870s Dakota territory, a young Sioux named White Bull earns respect by training a wild colt, which he names Tonka. However, a cruel cousin claims the horse, leading White Bull to set Tonka free. The horse eventually ends up with a US cavalry captain, just as Sitting Bull unites the tribes to resist the growing US presence, exemplified by the bigoted General Custer. The story converges at the Little and Big Horn rivers.
