In 1760s France, a young girl named Suzanne is sent to a convent by her parents, expecting her to become a nun. Despite her initial resistance, she is forced to pronounce her vows after discovering she's an illegitimate child. As she tries to escape her religious path, a new Mother Superior takes over, inflicting cruel humiliation on Suzanne. Eventually, she's transferred to another convent where she forms an unusual bond with the Mother Superior.
