In 1992 Los Angeles, a young entrepreneur named Joanne Beck faces sexism in the workplace, leading her to volunteer at a help center in South Central, where she meets Jay Hunter, a reputed gang member who's struggling to rebuild his life after prison. Despite their differences, they form an unlikely partnership and start an organization that gains national recognition in the fight against racial injustice, while also experiencing love, tragedy, and the ongoing struggle with racism in America.
