As Captain Forsythe succumbs to his injuries from a skirmish with Indians, he tasks his doctor, Captain Robert MacClaw, with leading their cavalry troop. Despite his men's reservations, MacClaw takes charge, vowing to do his best despite his lack of battle experience. When they arrive at a staging post, they're ordered to escort a wagon train of settlers west, but rumors of smallpox among them create tension.
