In 1938 Berlin, a young Nazi diplomat's wife, Louise Von Hollendorf, falls in love with Mitsuko Matsugae, an artist and the daughter of the Japanese ambassador. When her husband Heinz discovers their relationship, he tries to end it, but ultimately falls for Mitsuko as well. Meanwhile, outside forces, including an art professor and a Gestapo officer, threaten to tear the love triangle apart.
