Jim Taggert, a ship engineer, is rescued from a torpedoed tramp steamer by Joe Morgan, a former American gangster turned fisherman. Morgan operates from a secluded island off the South American coast, running a bar and dance resort catering to planters and traders. Taggert finds himself trapped at the Halfway House with a group of American entertainers. He secretly follows Morgan, discovering he's supplying German U-boat commanders with torpedoes.
