Middle-aged European pianist Paul Marvan is brought to America by a wealthy widow, Diana Fowler. He marries a nightclub dancer, Margo, who is known for her flirtatious behavior. However, Marvan's new wife's behavior inflames him, and he becomes increasingly disturbed due to financial and professional struggles. After his sponsor, Diana, is upset by his marriage, Marvan attempts to collect insurance money after accidentally injuring his hand in a printing press. However, the insurance claim is denied, and Margo leaves him for another man. Marvan is forced to seek refuge in a Salvation Army shelter, where he continues to play the piano with one hand.
