The movie follows the story of an ocean liner traveling from Mexico to Germany in 1933, carrying a diverse group of passengers from different backgrounds and social classes. The ship's doctor, Willi Schumann, falls in love with a Spanish countess, La Condesa, but their relationship is complicated by her addiction and the suspicions of the ship's captain. Meanwhile, other passengers navigate their own personal struggles and conflicts, including a middle-aged American woman trying to recapture her youth, a young American couple facing social and cultural differences, and a German Nazi sympathizer who spreads his beliefs among the other passengers. The story explores themes of identity, class, and morality, set against the backdrop of the rise of Nazi Germany.
