A young Russian teacher, Irene Roma, is given an amulet by her wounded brother, who has been targeted by a discredited Russian secret agent. To escape Shanghai, Irene turns to her friend Howard Barclay and his American photographer friend Johnny McGinty. Barclay suggests McGinty marry Irene, granting her American citizenship, but the plan hits a snag. Meanwhile, the amulet's value is sought by various parties, including Fuji Yokahama, who discovers its hiding place on a Japanese merchant ship.
