Saladin background

Saladin

King Richard the Lionheart, determined to reclaim the Holy Land, sets out on a perilous journey to avenge the brutal slaughter of a group of pilgrims by the commander of the Crusader army, Renaud de Chatillon, and to challenge the great Sultan Saladin, who has been victorious in battle.

Saladin, ruler of the surrounding kingdoms, launches a campaign against the Christians in the Holy Land after a convoy of Muslim pilgrims, including his sister, is sacked. Despite being outnumbered, he takes Jerusalem and nearly conquers the entire Middle East. In response, the European leaders form the 3rd Crusade, led by Richard the Lionheart of England. Although Accre is captured by the Crusaders, Saladin prevents the recapture of Jerusalem and ultimately negotiates with Richard, leaving the Holy Land in Muslim hands.
