He excelled in a special high school for troubled youth and developed a passion for exploring the world. Matt bought and restored old sailboats, learning to sail on the fly. He embarked on a solo voyage from the USA to Europe, West Africa, and back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, and later attempted a historic solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the Americas, completing the 27,000-mile journey in 309 days.
