A year after his father's death, Matt Anderson, a bright and distracted young man, moves in with his brother Michael in Miami Beach. Matt takes a lifeguard job at the local pool and does some writing for Mike's advertising agency, but struggles with the materialism of the industry. He finds himself drawn to Mike's girlfriend Natalie, who is caring and romantic, but is hesitant to risk losing his brother. When Natalie dumps Mike, Matt is left heartbroken after T.J., a troubled young boy they had been trying to help, drowns at the pool.
