On a primitive tropical island, engineer Kariya arrives to drill a well for the sugar mill, assisted by Kametaro from the inbred Futori family. The family's patriarch has his son Nekichi chained in a pit, forcing him to dig as a ritual to appease the gods for breaking customs. Nekichi secretly loves his sister Uma, a shaman priestess at the sacred shrine, which is the only source of good water near the mill. Uma is also the mistress of Ryu, the mill's manager. The patriarch tries to arrange for Kariya to marry his intellectually challenged daughter Toriko.
