In 1939, the Nazis are on the hunt for men who have escaped Germany, unaware that a mild-mannered professor, Horatio Smith, is secretly the rescuer. Smith, a professor of archaeology, has recruited six students to accompany him on a research expedition to Germany, but in reality, his mission is to free those trapped by the Nazi regime. As the Nazis investigate the escapes, General von Graum believes the rescuer is British and plans to identify him at a reception at the British Embassy in Berlin, enlisting the help of a young woman named Ludmilla Kohls, who he thinks can uncover the perpetrator's identity.
