In 1957 Paris, literature student Anne Goupil attends a party with her brother, where she meets expatriate American Philip Kaufman and theatre director Gerard Lenz, who arrives with enigmatic Terry. The conversation turns to the apparent suicide of their friend Juan, a Spanish activist who recently broke up with Terry. As tensions rise, Philip warns Anne that the forces responsible for Juan's death will soon target Gerard, who is struggling to mount a production of Shakespeare's "Pericles" without financial backing. Anne joins the play to help Gerard and uncover the truth behind Juan's mysterious death.
