After returning from Iraq, Jack Armstrong, a skilled but troubled individual, is diagnosed with an undiagnosed illness and sent home to care for his wife, Lizzie, who unexpectedly passes away in a car accident. Miraculously, Jack recovers and decides to take their two children, Mikki and Cory, on a planned family vacation to his in-laws' beachside cottage in Channing. However, the trip becomes complicated as Jack struggles to balance his new role as single parent, deal with his mother-in-law's overprotectiveness, and navigate his children's grief and personal issues. Meanwhile, Jack forms a connection with Jenna Fontaine, a restaurateur who has also experienced a difficult past, and their children, Mikki and Liam, begin to develop a bond.
