A young East German medical student, Stefan, embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind the creation of the AIDS virus, driven by his father's involvement as a renowned scientist in the former GDR.

In the midst of preparations for the premiere of Puccini's opera Turandot in San Francisco, a serial killer is targeting HIV-positive young men in the city's gay bars, painting their bodies with a red cross. A young gay East German medical student, Stefan, arrives in the city to investigate the trail of his dead father, a former AIDS researcher.
