Phyllis and Steven Webber, a San Francisco couple, face a tough spot in their 15-year marriage. Steven, who manages his parents' dry cleaning chain, feels Phyllis is more devoted to her work as an SFPD vice detective than to him. When Phyllis discovers Steven's infidelity, she throws him out, and he files for divorce and custody of their 13-year-old son. Phyllis can't afford the lawyers Steven's parents can, and she's trapped in a custody battle. A pro bono lawyer, Arthur Bannister, helps her, but she soon learns his law firm wants info on a police case for another client, which ties back to her case and puts her in a tough spot.
