Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, or 'Modi' as he is known to his friends, finds himself caught in a whirlwind of events in war-torn Paris in 1916. Fleeing from the authorities, Modi contemplates leaving his career behind, but is persuaded otherwise by his Bohemian companions Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine, and Beatrice Hastings. Seeking guidance from his friend Leopold Zborowski, Modi's inner turmoil reaches a breaking point when confronted by an American collector who could alter his destiny.
