Older Hank Armitage and his assistant Sam Wells live a lonely existence as a lighthouse keeper and his assistant, respectively, on a small rocky outcropping off the coast. Sam has been stringing along a local girl, Connie, promising marriage, but Connie's unwanted attention and subsequent unemployment make her want to marry Sam sooner rather than later. When Connie meets Hank and learns that Sam may not be the honest guy she thought he was, she decides to marry Hank instead, leaving Sam heartbroken. The confined quarters of the lighthouse with the newlyweds and spurned Sam create a tense environment, with each character's actions driven by their own desires and misunderstandings about the others.
