The film follows the lives of Changhua Zhang and Suqin Chen, a migrant Chinese worker couple who have been away from their village for 16 years. They left their only child, Qin Zhang, with her grandparents when she was just one year old and only see their children once a year during Lunar New Year. The story spans three years, focusing on the family's annual trips home and the parents' relationship with their children, including their adolescent son Yang. The couple's goal is to escape poverty by working in a clothing sweatshop and sending money home to support their children's education. However, their sacrifice takes a toll on their children, particularly Qin, who feels she has missed out on a normal childhood and feels sad and isolated in the village.
