In 1950s Brooklyn, a tumultuous era of union corruption and brutality, a prostitute finds herself torn between her profession and a blossoming romance with one of her clients. Meanwhile, a troubled individual grapples with a profound revelation: his own homosexuality.

Set in 1950s Brooklyn, this film is based on Hubert Selby, Jr.'s novel about a group of struggling characters living in squalid conditions. The story follows a union strike leader who discovers his own sexuality, a prostitute who falls in love with a sailor, a negotiator hiding his communist affiliation, and a family dealing with their teenage daughter's illegitimate pregnancy.
