In 1931 Berlin, a working-class family struggles to survive amidst the devastating effects of the Great Depression, including widespread unemployment. Following her brother's tragic suicide, Anni's family is forced to relocate to Kuhle Wampe, a lakeside camp filled with jobless workers. After her relationship with Franz ends, Anni returns to Berlin and joins the workers' youth movement.
