A Manhattan painter's life is forever changed after spending seven months in the Amazon basin with the Harakambut in 1955. Years later, he's approached by filmmakers to revisit Peru, but instead agrees to return to the Asmat in New Guinea where he had a idyllic experience. He reunites with an old friend and lover, Aipit, and eventually agrees to return to Peru to reconnect with the people he had previously joined on a violent raid.
