An aging man named Vengadam is released from jail and begins a two-day journey back to his hometown of Kanchipuram. As he travels, he reflects on his past, which is triggered by various events on the bus. Vengadam is a talented silk weaver who had vowed to marry a woman wearing a silk saree, but could only afford to marry a woman without one. Despite being a skilled weaver, he struggled to make a living, earning only 7 rupees per silk saree. He promises his newborn daughter that he will marry her off in a silk saree, but is unable to fulfill this promise as he sacrifices his life savings to help his sister-in-law.
