A range conflict in Johnson County, Wyoming, known as the Johnson County War, took place from 1889 to 1893. It began when cattle companies brutally targeted alleged rustlers, many of whom were settlers competing for land, livestock, and water rights. The violence escalated between large ranchers and smaller settlers, culminating in the Powder River Country with hired gunmen invading the county. A 200-man posse formed to counter the incursion, leading to a stand-off until the US Cavalry intervened on President Benjamin Harrison's orders, ending the siege, although further fighting continued.
